“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”

Vermont News: Cindy Sheehan Visits Vermont

The NewsBlue1Moon & FrogDaddy

Cindy Sheehan visited Springfield, Vermont on Sunday March 4th, to talk about Impeachment and Bringing the Troops Home. Cindy spoke to a packed house at the Unitarian Universalists Church. Springfield was one of many stops during her whirlwind 3-day tour of Vermont just prior to Town- Meeting Day.

She and several other speakers traveled on Jim Goodnow’s “Impeachment Bus” and arrived to songs of welcome, led by Jane Newton on the guitar, and Jim Romer, with vocals.

Dan DeWalt, organizer of the tour, talked about how Vermonters could make a difference, and the importance of citizen participation in our Town Meetings. Marine Cpl. Matt Howard spoke of his tours of duty in Iraq, including the bringing down of the statue of Saddam, and the reality of the not-so-large crowd of on-lookers (despite media portrayals). He spoke movingly of the difficulties in Iraq for our soldiers – among other things, of trying to “win the hearts and minds” of Iraqis by driving around waiting to be shot at, and then shooting back at everyone in the vicinity. Veteran Army Sgt. Adrienne Kinne, now working at the V.A., talked of dealing with the aftermath of the impact of war, and participating in highest-level sanctioned torture, on our veterans and of the emotional difficulties they face. Author John Nichols spoke of our country’s history, of the Constitution, and about some of the many reasons he feels George W. Bush should be impeached. And of course, Cindy Sheehan spoke to a very receptive crowd, of her mission, her travels, her life’s work.

Our dear friend Jim Romer from Springfield Peace and Justice introduces Dan Dewalt (the Vermont citizen who got Impeachment on Vermont's ballot). Jim is an ex-vet himself.

The early crowd starts to shuffle in and there is the realization, that we do not have enough seating. We scramble for more chairs and seats.

Jane Newton, who keeps our Springfield Peace and Justice organized, leading the group in song to welcome the tour warmly.

The Peace Bus arrives with Cindy Sheehan, Dan Dewalt and the other speakers.

Dan DeWalt takes center stage to tell Vermonters they have a unique opportunity in starting Impeachment preceedures against President G.W. Bush by placing it on Town Ballots this Tuesday and in effect forcing Vermont Senators to move forward in Washington.

Iraq War Veteran (Marine Cpl. Matt Howard) tells his story of 2 tours in Iraq.

Iraq War Veteran (Army Sgt. Adrienne Kinne)tells her story too, and is now working for veterans in hopes of getting real funding for hospitals to take care of our Vets.

A great speaker and author (John Nichols - author of The Genius of Impeachment: The Founders' Cure for Royalism), speaks to the crowd with powerful statements and clear explanations of how Bush has broken so many laws against our Constitution.

Cindy Sheehan speaks to the crowd, although exhausted from travel, she speaks from her heart and tells the story we all know so well and thanks Vermont for it's actions.

Blue and Cindy chat for a moment after the speakers have finished.

FrogDaddy grabs a picture of Blue and Al, after Cindy recieves flowers.

Al, our 8 yr. old, took many pictures, including some of the above during the events - he was probably the youngest audience member present.

Fortunately, the hecklers which had followed the tour all over Vermont remained for the most part outside, holding signs, and did not disrupt the event here as happened at other stops.
