 | Caveat Emptor!!!!! |
rhiannonbrighid writes "
Caveat emptor, or simply "buyer beware" in Latin, is all that I can say about Simon Gift Cards, American Express Gift Cards, and the other credit card gift cards. These gift cards were all the rage during this past holiday season. I can tell you that ....
I received two Simon (Visa) cards and one American Express card. I can also tell you that I hope I never receive one again and that I will never purchase one of these cards for anyone!
After having quite the terrible experience with my Simon gift card last night, today i decided to write a not-so-nice e-mail to Simon.com. I have been so kind as to attach the letter. The e-mail contains all the purchases I made, my balances, and then the experience I had last night.
"To whom this may concern:
I just wanted to email you to tell you how disappointed I am with my Simon Giftcard. I'm so angry that I've already told my friends, family, and co-workers to NEVER purchase one as a gift for someone.
First of all, taking money off a card after 7 months is ridiculous! Charging someone to actually buy the card is also ridiculous! I'm just glad I received it as a gift, because I would never purchase a gift certificate where I had to spend extra money just to get it.
Next, I cannot believe what trouble I had last night at a Best Buy store. Now, I keep very good records of my spendings, because I've run into problems with other gift cards, i.e. American Express gift card (another one I will never get again!). Originally, I started off with $50 on my Simon card and it was a gift for Christmas, so it was only purchased maybe 1 or 2 months ago. My first purchase was made in tax free New Hampshire and I spent a total of $29.99 which left my balance at $20.01. My next purchase was at a restaurant in Mass where I spent a total (including tax) of $11.01. I did not authorize anything more than $11.01 because I left the tip in cash. This purchase would have left me at $9.00. So, I went to Best Buy in tax free New Hampshire and wanted to buy a movie for $9.99. The guy swiped the card and said, "It doesn't automatically deduct unless there is enough to pay for the whole thing. How much do you think is on there?" I said "Oh, at least 8 dollars." So, he tried putting in 8, declined, he tried 7, declined. Finally, he said "I'm calling the number." He tried calling two times, and nothing picked up. He kept trying different numbers, and he got down to $4.00, which went through. That was all he could get to deduct, even though I clearly had $9 left on the card. I was so embarassed, because I looked like I was trying to cheat them and the poor cashier couldn't get it to work and a line was forming. So, I had to borrow money from a friend because your card didn't work! Today, I was so infuriated that I checked the balance online (for the first time because there are charges for checking cards too). It said I had a $5 balance. Now how the hell does that work? First, I'm declined for $8, but I still somehow have $5? Hmm.. so I guess I really did have $9 in the first place, seeing as how he got to deduct $4 and now I have $5. I think you can do the math!
How funny is it that now there is some law suit against Simon for the gift cards? Trust me, I'll be keeping up with the news and will continue to tell everyone what a rip off Simon cards are!
Thanks for nothing!"
