“If a man has an apartment stacked to the ceiling with newspapers we call him crazy. If a woman has a trailer house full of cats we call her nuts. But when people pathologically hoard so much cash that they impoverish the entire nation, we put them on the cover of Fortune magazine and pretend that they are role models.”

 My Last Good Bye

Announcementsblue1moon writes "Dear Alienlove Community,

It is with a heavy heart that I must tell you that Blue1moon lost her battle with cancer about a year ago. In the end, her passing was a peaceful one and she was in the presence of her family and loved ones. Her passing just marks the start of a new adventure for.

Throughout her entire life, she always marched to the beat of her own drum. She always stood up for what she believed in, and for those who could not or would not stand up for themselves, regardless of the consequences to her. She always preached messages of love and peace, and her very last words were, “I love you all.” So if you would like to honor her memory, I would encourage you to preach these same messages to those around you.

With this, I wanted to let you know that I will be taking the site down in August. This community meant the world to her, and she always talked about it. Unfortunately, her sickness stole her energy away and did not allow her to post or update as frequently as she would have liked.

I will miss her a great deal, and wanted to post a poem to honor her memory:

Always There

Adapted from Emma Marie Etwell

When you remember me,

Please do not weep.

My body may not be there.

It has chosen to sleep.

I'm not that far away.

My soul lives on,

Looking down, watching over

You and everyone.

And when you feel sad

And life seems so blue,

Just remember

That my spirit has its arms around you.

And on those special days,

Times that you wish I could see,

That cool breeze flowing past you...

Well, that will be me,

So don't be sad.

Have no fear.

I am just on another adventure,

But I'll always be near.

I still watch you

Every minute, every day.

My love and soul are with you,

And that's where they will stay."

Opinion: Why End the Income Tax in Massachusetts?

Announcementsby Carla Howell and Michael Cloud

If it were possible to put an Initiative on the Ballot to End the Income Tax in Massachusetts… would you want it?

What if Ending the Income Tax in Massachusetts had nearly a 50/50 chance of winning in 2008?

What if this End the Income Tax Ballot Initiative could set in motion copycat Ballot Initiatives in 4 or 8 or 12 more states in 2010 and 2012?

If this were the first step in dismantling Big Government in America, if you could help make it happen, would you want in?

It is possible. But don't take our word for it.
Just look over the amazing but true facts, figures, and information.
Because when you learn what we've learned, you'll be as excited as we are.

Three Surprising Massachusetts Vote Results ....

Politics: October 27: National Mobilization Against the War in Iraq

AnnouncementsFrom United for Peace & Justice

A National Day of Protest Against the War in Iraq
11 Regional Demonstrations
Boston, Chicago, Jonesborough (TN), Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York City, Orlando, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Seattle

Momentum is building in response to UFPJ's call for massive regional antiwar demonstrations on Saturday, October 27th. On that day, people from all walks of life will gather in 11 cities around the country in a national expression of the breadth and depth of antiwar sentiment in this nation. For many people, it will be their first step in transforming their antiwar feelings into antiwar action.

The regional character of the October 27th protest is unique. There have been many national marches and quite a few coordinated days of local protest, but never a day of regional action on this scale. We have the opportunity in these next 22 days to transform a good idea into a powerful reality. But it will only happen if everyone jumps into the organizing work. ...

Politics: Opportunity to Restore Habeas Corpus

AnnouncementsLegislative Action Message from:
FCNL - A Quaker Lobby in the Public Interest

The new Congress has the chance to restore one of the oldest and most important checks on arbitrary governmental power, the protection of habeas corpus. This principle -- that no government is above the law and that all detainees can challenge the fairness of their detention in front of an independent court -- has been a cornerstone of Anglo-Saxton legal systems for 800 years.

In 2006, at the president’s request, Congress changed U.S. law so that certain detainees who are not citizens can now be denied the ability to question whether they are being wrongfully detained. We at FCNL believe a majority of senators support restoring habeas corpus rights for non-citizen detainees, but these senators need to be encouraged to act...

Mr. and Mrs. America buy a new car, and it's NOT an Augmentation

Late this last fall, as November approached, Mr. and Mrs. America decided to go shopping for a new car. Almost from the day they had bought it six years earlier, their current car, a Liberator model, had been very unreliable. Its instruments were constantly telling them things they knew from their own senses to be untrue. The gas gauge would indicate empty when they had just topped up the tank, or the speedometer would show them at over the speed limit when parked in their driveway.

Worse yet, the only time it seemed to run strong was when headed off at breakneck speed for distant cities. And even there it had proven difficult to control, swerving wildly and always smashing into other cars there. Most of the time it behaved as if someone else were driving it. Repair and insurance costs were becoming shocking, even awesome, with no end in sight. In a word, it was too large, and ill-suited for doing the protection errands they really needed to do closer to home.

So it was that they set out to return to the dealership that sold them their Liberator. The salesman stepped forward as he saw them walking onto the lot. "We just got in all the new models." he enthused. Mr. America interrupted him. "The Liberator you sold us last time has given us nothing but problems . . . we've decided to downsize." The salesman countered, "But the new models are so POWERFUL, the ads are all over the TV newscasts. Take the new Escalation for example, everybody's going to want one." ...

Member's Business: The Future of Consortiumnews.com

AnnouncementsBy Robert Parry

Eleven years ago, we founded Consortiumnews.com because we felt the U.S. news media was losing its way – and was taking the American Republic along with it. Our hope was that by combining the new technology of the Internet with the old principles of news, we could help put journalism back on the right track and with it the nation.

Our original Consortiumnews idea was to seek out diverse resources so we could create a full-service institution for producing investigative-style stories on important topics and use the Internet as the chief means of getting the information to the public.

From the start, our existence was an implicit criticism of what was going on in the major U.S. news media of the 1990s, as the press corps wasted countless hours of broadcast time and vast forests of newsprint on items like the O.J. Simpson case or stories about Bill Clinton’s personal life.

Meanwhile, truly important stories – including new evidence implicating prior U.S. administrations in serious Cold War crimes – were being pushed aside as too historical, too controversial or too much of a downer....

Vermont News: Dec. 10 Vermont Statewide Anti-war Meeting

Friends, below and attached is an announcement and invitation. Please spread the word and try to make the meeting.
-Joseph Gainza

The elections proved that being against the US occupation of Iraq is now a majority opinion in this country, BUT will Congress act to bring the troops home now? Not if we wait for them to act. Democratic Party leaders are already waffling on this issue. We must keep up the pressure and be in the streets....

Vermont News: Hope Rises From The Ashes of My Lai

Friends, here is something hopeful in these dark times. There is still hope for the better world we seek.
-Joseph Gainza

The Peace and Social Concerns Committee of the Putney Friends Meeting presents Mike Boehm of Madison Quakers, Inc. with a slide presentation and discussion of a series of current peace and reconciliation projects in Vietnam. The event will be at the Putney Friends Meeting, north on Route 5, on Sunday December 3rd at 1:15 pm, and is free and open to the public.

Vietnam veteran Mike Boehm has been working in My Lai and elsewhere in Vietnam since 1992. Boehm has traveled to Vietnam 16 times since then to facilitate these projects. A veteran who served in Cu Chi, Vietnam working in Operations from 1968 to 1969, Boehm first returned to Vietnam in 1992 to help build a medical clinic. While there he began to come to terms with his own experiences there and to understand the tremendous capacity of people-to-people projects for building peace and reconciliation between our two societies....

Oct 5th A Day of Resistance

Dear Friends,

Please join Gold Star Families for Peace members across the country in answering this call.

Sept 28th the Senate passed a bill allowing our government to TORTURE those they deem a threat to the US in our names. The Bill also suspended those detained the right to Habeas Corpus which means they have no right to appeal or question their detention. How soon before our government views those of us in the Peace Movement as enemies of the US. How soon before we are snatched from raliies and "detained". It is time to take to the streets.
