 | Heat Shield - An AlienLove Community Story – Part 2 |

From AlienLove’s forums comes the “community story,” Heat Shield. Begun by FrogDaddy, members have been contributing since, so the story is ongoing. I am reprinting the next ten entries, more to come at a later date. Read Part 1

The story continues:
(SG) "Damn home brew", I thought to myself, "probably half full of peyote buttons".
I began to stagger my way back thru the doorway, though I was sure I could not drive in this condition, I certainly didn't want to be alone in a strange crowd if I'd been set up with a clumsy attempt to drug me into submission. I remembered the rumors I'd heard of a sudden resurgence of slavery in the area, and the pistol was a comforting reassurance in my waistband.

(FD) Driving in this region was always hot and today was no exception. The equatorial heat was devastating for a northern boy and the humidity drove me insane. Even with the windows open, the breeze that came in made it feel like the exhaust from a jet engine. No relief...

After a bit of fussing and a special dragon event that included fireworks, staged in her honor, Hildie was helped onto Wilanona’s back. Bianca leapt up to join her as if she had been practicing all day. Annaw settled on her shoulder, for the ride home. Wilanona made sure that the flight was even easier on her injured partner than the trip out to the Dragonfest. Although many had reassured her that Hildie would be fine, the dragon still worried and felt that somehow it must be her fault. The trip had been her idea in the first place...

| Dragon Feathers!?! - #4 |

The following day, Aunt Hildie again surprised Bianca with the announcement that it was time to meet a “few” other dragons. Bianca was wild with excitement, Annaw was no less pleased. Wilanona seemed even more delighted than the others, they could hear her singing. Of course, it was her suggestion, after all. It had been a while since she had had the chance to frolic with other dragons, now that Hildie was getting older, they traveled less. Aunt Hildie called Bianca’s parent’s and told them they were going to be spending the day at a Fair. Since things seemed to be going so well, Bianca’s parents eventually agreed to let her stay with Hildie for the rest of the week.
Bianca and Annaw were extremely impatient to go, Annaw flying around the house squawking, “Hurry, hurry”, only causing Aunt Hildie to become more distracted and dithering. Eventually, however, they got off. As they closed the door behind them, standing on the porch, Bianca wondered aloud, “Where do dragons hold a Fair? And how ever are we going to get there?”

The sun rose, still low in the sky, and a beam of light reached under Wilanona’s wing. The elder dragon slept on peacefully, but Annaw squawked, hungrily, as the light hit Aunt Hildie in the face. Bianca woke to her dragon’s appeal. It was only seconds before Wilanona became consciously aware of the movement under her wing, lifting it slightly, as she peaked beneath, to sing good morning to her friends.
Bianca was awe-struck, Annaw sang in harmony with Wilanona, Aunt Hildie closed her eyes and just enjoyed the dragons' welcome of the new day...

Bianca loved living in the country most of the time, but it could be lonely. She loved the woods and her hiding places under the branches of the giant, ancient ‘mother’ trees. The swampy regions full of mystery, the old stone walls, half-fallen down that ran through both field and forest.
She sat down on a rock that was one of her favorite resting spots, and daydreamed in the warm morning sun. She knew her mother was worried about her, had even made an appointment with a therapist for her, after Bianca admitted that she sometimes heard someone else’s voice in her head. She could hear it again now, sometimes it was just a faint buzz in the background, but increasingly, as she got older, it happened more often...

Thunder crashed and lightning flashed so rapidly and close, it drowned out all other noise. I thought it was just another storm, they’d been happening often in the past week or two. Once again the weather had gone from snow to mud to blistering heat in what seemed just a few short weeks.
The power went out, which was not unexpected, given the intensity of the storm. I fumbled around looking for flashlights or candles, of which there were plenty, but not so easy to find in the dark. I closed my eyes, for some reason feeling more comfortable in the pitch dark this way. Perhaps an unconscious attempt to feel in control my environment…

It’s cold, very cold. Cold for almost as long as I can remember, and that seems to me a very long time. It feels like I am moving…fast or slow I cannot always be sure. Sometimes it feels like I am moving faster than at other times. I am a wanderer, veering here and there, tugged in this direction and that.
Now I feel a stronger pull, irresistible... I seem to float at the whims of the universe, traversing space and time without intention. I am moving faster now, though I know not how I am aware of that fact…

| Recurring (Prophetic) Dreams |

Have you ever had a dream that continued on day after day? But each time you awakened, you only briefly remembered that it was a continuation of the dream you had had the day before, and the day before that? Then memory fades until the next awakening. Well, I have been having one of those dreams. I seem to be trying to escape forces beyond my control with a group of disheartened people, our lives feel like they depend upon escape and while we do not seem to be closely guarded, our attempts to leave are subverted by unexpected obstacles at every turn.
Now the dreams seem to have come true, perhaps they were prophetic, a warning of what was to come…

"Critical Evaluation Tests"
I looked out the window this morning and there was a good 2 feet of fresh snow. The wind was blowing and causing huge drifts
around the outside doors and I could see it was the kind of day to light the fire and stay inside. But today is the big test day.
This morning I plan on a running the first of my devices for an hour or two and analizing the data that's returned.
I chug down 2 cups of coffee and head out to the lab....
